Wikipedia Category Summaries
A bookmarklet and form to list summaries for a Wikipedia category
This page is a Wikipedia browsing aid. Use it to get a list of pages in a Wikipedia
category
along with the abstract of each page in the list. It can be used in two ways:
- Enter a Wikipedia category name and click Go
- Install the bookmarklet to your bookmark toolbar and then click on it
when you're on a Wikipedia category page - To install:
Notes:
- If you're using Greasemonkey the url's in the list will automatically be links.
If you don't you can install the Text To Link Favelet.
- If you've installed the bookmarklet on you bookmark toolbar and you click on it when you're not on a Wikipedia categroy page, it will just
bring up this page where can enter a category.
- The form (as opposed to the bookmarklet) is useful when I'm surfing on a low-function, small screen device - my Palm T|X to be specific.
The Palm's Blazer browser doesn't support bookmarklets, so
I cut the catagory name from the Wikipedia category page and paste it into this page.
- This brings together several ideas that I'm sure have been used but I've not seen:
- Using a statically served page as a helper page for a Javascript bookmarklet so you don't have to have a big long line of unreadable
code in the bookmarklet
- Using dbpedia.org not to ask questions like People who were born in Berlin before 1900
(Clay Shirky: "the promise of the Semantic Web -- it will improve all the areas of your life where you currently use
syllogisms.-
Which is to say, almost nowhere."), but rather to simply reassemble in simple but useful ways the factoids that dbpedia has so kindly
atomized into RDF
triples
- To do:
- accept the category name in more forms: complete url and with the Category: prefix in addition to just the category name
